bookmark_borderNames and Pseudonyms

There has been a conversation on the Golden Crown Literary Society list about pseudonyms. Someone posted links to two sites that can help you find all of the people in either the US or the UK that have your name/pseudonym.

There’s the “How Many Of Me” site for the US and the “You’re Not Me” site for the UK.

Folks will be relieved to know that there no mes in the UK and only 5 in the US. Phew. Can you imagine if I were spreading across the pond? shudder at the thought! Oddly, the pseudonym I briefly considered is just as rare.

It was suggested that if you want to know if any of the “yous” out there who are writers, do an Amazon.com search. If anyone knows a website that lists every writer out there, let me know!

bookmark_borderBackups

I didn’t realize how long it had been since I did a backup of my writing files.

My laptop has been acting wonky lately due to some goofy software I think. Anyway, one of the files that was not wanting to open was my wordcount spreadsheet.

A quick check of my backup files told me I hadn’t saved the WIP folder since APRIL!

So, guess what I am doing?

bookmark_borderTime Change = Safety Time

It’s that silly time of the year again when we screw up 6 mos worth of circadian rhythms by changing all the external clocks. Since it is fall, we turn the clocks back an hour as daylight savings time (DST) ends and standard time begins.

And to further confuse things, this means we on the east coast of the US are now -5 hrs off of Universal Coordinated Time (UTC) and Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) time (during DST, we are -5 from UTC and -4 from GMT).

While you are changing the clocks, either last night or now, change the batteries in your smoke detectors too. Sure, the battery  is  might be still good, but it’s better to know you have a live battery in it all the time, dontcha think?

If you have a smoke detector or carbon monoxide (CO) detector, change the battery. If you don’t have one or the other or both, what are you thinking? My brother and his family were sick one day. The kids had gone to bed and my sis-in-law was about to go too. But her mom decided to drop by and immediately recognized the signs of CO poisoning. Lucky for them, she came by! Else, we would’ve had a four casket funeral.

If you live in a rental property, chances are the local codes require the detector(s) to be “hard wired” but many still have a battery for when the power goes out.

The Red Cross recommends that you also take this time to prepare for emergencies by restocking your emergency supplies and other such stuff. They have information about home fire safety, too.

Oh, and one thing I learned a long time ago: fire extinguishers are a great thing to have but only if in the right place. But putting them near possible fire hazards is not always a good idea. For example, most people have one on the counter near the cook stove. But if a fire starts on the cook stove, will you be able to get close enough to reach the extinguisher?! By a door into the kitchen is an excellent place to put it. Make sure everyone in the house knows how to use one. I recommend pulling the safety pin now then putting it back in place. By breaking that seal, you are guaranteeing you will be able to put out the fire instead of having to figure out how to pull the pin! (been there, done that, coughed smoke)

Election Time:

Gawd I’ll be glad when the election is over! For one, I want my spouse home before dark. They are flooded with junk mail from politicians. By the way, the political mail is paid for at the bulk rate price, as you would expect. However, it gets treated the same as first class mail. That means your letter carrier (city) or mail carrier (rural) must take them and all the other first class mail out the day it comes in. So when your mail is late, it’s because not only are the politicians invading your commercials (our mute button is wearing out!), but they are also invading your mailbox.

Immigration:

Bush signs Mexico fence into law
US President George W Bush has authorised 700 miles (1,125km) of new fencing along the US-Mexico border, in a move to curb illegal immigration.

From about August 1961 until November 1989, there was a thing called The Berlin Wall. It was created to cut down on people leaving communist controlled East Berlin/Germany. Practically overnight, people awoke to find themselves stuck on one side or the other. According to the article on Wikipedia, it backfired for the communists when the wall became a physical symbol of “free world” vs “communism”.

Isn’t it ironic, then, that the US, the alleged home of freedom itself, is erecting a similar wall? It is designed to cut down on people leaving the poverty stricken nation of Mexico. These illegal people come here and take jobs that no body else wants, work for a mere pittance of money, and then have the nerve to send home that money, without having to pay taxes on it. What most of these people earn here in a month, would take them a year to earn in Mexico.

Don’t get me started on who founded this nation to begin with and who later came from such a wide variety of places that the name “mixing pot” came to mean something totally different. Don’t make me recite (or sing) the words that are on the book the Statue of Liberty holds.

And definitely don’t get me started on how I am tired of seeing Spanish on even my local generic milk; of going to the Health Department in my three-year-old jeans and having to wait alongside Hispanics with cellphones, well dressed children, and watch them leave in their fancy cars; and of being tired of being ogled at the laundromat or at the convenience store down the road.

But deny them the right to be here and annoy me? No, that is wrong. Make them citizens. Make them pay taxes. Make them learn how to speak the prevalent language in this country (before I have to learn Spanish). Make them accept responsibility.

Marriage:

But then again, while this nation is busy putting back up the Berlin Wall, we are also busy defining the undefinable. A marriage certificate is, basically, a civil union. A religious cleric can be granted the privilege of handing out those civil union certificates. Heck, people can get a pastor degree from Rolling Stones, dress like Elvis whilst listening to people say “I do”, and be allowed to hand out those civil union certificates. And people can get these certificates with no counseling, nothing but a blood test, after only knowing each other for a few minutes (or less).

How, then, can the US gov’t define who can get married and who can’t? The ruling yesterday in New Jersey mentions “committed” homosexual couples. Let’s define committed before we define marriage. Just because heterosexual couples have a piece of paper that declares them married, it doesn’t force them to be committed to each other. If it did, there wouldn’t be a 50+% divorce rate. That percentage means that if two couples get married today in a ceremony by Elvis, one of those couples will divorce. Who knows the “divorce” rate among homosexual couples? It can’t truly be measured since the line between “shacking up” and “married-slash-committed” is rather blurred in homosexual circles. You can’t count shacking up unless you count the heterosexual couples who do the same. You can’t count committed without setting a time limit. Five years? Ten years? Seven? Lorna and I have been together 16 yrs. Mike and Chuck have been together almost 30.

It is my opinion, and take it for what you think it is worth, that “committed” homosexual couples are more together than “married” heterosexual couples. Here’s why:

When Lorna and I bought this house, we had to buy it as “tenants-in-common” which means we both legally owned the house and that when one of us dies, the other gets it in whole. We have medical power of attorney papers that grants us access to each other and the decisions that need to be made when one of us is hospitalized. We have to have wills and other forms, all of which must be a conscious decision with plenty of thought and purpose.

When my brother and his wife (and I love them both) bought their house, her name doesn’t necessarily have to be on the deed. When he dies (and may he never), she automatically gets the house. If he is ill, she is automatically allowed to make decisions and visit him (although they do have medical power of attorney for big decisions). They don’t necessarily have to make conscious decisions with plenty of thought and purpose about what to do when the other dies or is ill.

And that is why I think heterosexual married couples have such a high divorce rate. Other than walking down the aisle toward Elvis, most of their work is done for them. Laws are in place to protect and grant rights to one or the other. They don’t have to think everything through. Too many assumptions can be made. And besides, they were married by Elvis.

But it also is why there is a lack of commitment in homosexual couples. If I die, leaving behind medical and other debts, Lorna is not responsible for anything. Homosexual couples can just as easily use a Uhaul to move out as they do to move in, and there not be any lawyer involved.

I receive state Medicaid because they only count my income and I can’t be on her insurance. (As an aside, they do count her income for food stamps since we share the refrigerator and meals. What, sharing the bed doesn’t count??) I don’t have to pay taxes since I earn a mere pittance and fall way under the poverty line. All this because they won’t recognize our “marriage”. If they did, then I’d not be eligible for Medicaid (saving the state nearly 10K a year in meds alone) and I’d be on her insurance; we’d have to file taxes on both our incomes (and Lorna could claim my medical bills); Medicare would have to pay less for my other medical expenses, including a huge chunk of my 15K+ wheelchair.

bookmark_borderBacteria Underground

For those of you who write SF, this article may spark some ideas. I know I had several flashes in me brain.

Bacteria Found Thriving Deep Underground

A Princeton-led research group has discovered an isolated community of bacteria nearly two miles underground that derives all of its energy from the decay of radioactive rocks rather than from sunlight. According to members of the team, the finding suggests life might exist in similarly extreme conditions even on other worlds.

The self-sustaining bacterial community, which thrives in nutrient-rich groundwater found near a South African gold mine, has been isolated from Earth’s surface for several million years. It represents the first group of microbes known to depend exclusively on geologically produced hydrogen and sulfur compounds for nourishment. The extreme conditions under which the bacteria live bear a resemblance to those of early Earth, potentially offering insights into the nature of organisms that lived long before our planet had an oxygen atmosphere.

(snip)

That subterranean world, Onstott said, is a lightless pool of hot, pressurized salt water that stinks of sulfur and noxious gases humans would find unbreathable. But the newly discovered bacteria, which are distantly related to the Firmicutes division of microbes that exist near undersea hydrothermal vents, flourish there.

“The radiation allows for the production of lots of sulfur compounds that these bacteria can use as a high-energy source of food,” Onstott said. “For them, it’s like eating potato chips.”

I’ve got that SF I keep poking on, the one with the sentient planet. I really want the planet itself to be sentient, not some mold, fungus, or bacteria. This article opens up a whole possibility in SF, as well as in the real world.

I have spent a lot of time writing. The weather is still cold but no longer as painful for me once the barometer number rose. Our heating situation is still wonky though although we hope to remedy that tomorrow.

Simple Sarah now sits at 27573. I wrote a large huge big scene today but now I’m thinking I will cut it and maybe use it later, maybe not. I just don’t think it fits. It is a great scene though. I am trying to tie things together then return to where I stopped. But it just keeps growing without much tying.

The season’s first major cold front (actually, two of them) is hitting the area now and later Monday/early Tuesday. That means that I am in pain, grumpy, and cuddled up with a hot water bottle.

Something is going on with my shoulder and neck so I am cutting back on the time I spend typing as well as *gasp* mouse usage.

Unless things turn out better than I think, I’ll be AWOL from here for a day or two or three.

… A light wintry mix and low wind chills in the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains today and tonight…

Scattered snow showers will develop late this afternoon and continue through tonight across the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains… mainly along the Tennessee border. Up to an inch of snow accumulation is possible in parts of the northern mountains… mainly at ridgetops. A few slick spots will likely develop on roads that run through higher gaps. Even this morning patchy light freezing drizzle could result in isolated slick spots at higher elevations in the northern mountains.

In addition to some light snow accumulations… gusty northwest winds will drop wind chill values to between zero and 10 above at elevations above 4000 feet tonight.

bookmark_borderNaNo Word Count Meters

The php code is courtesy of danguyf who has done a marvelous job of making this one (and others) available.

Once November 1 rolls around, the word count data will start functioning. For now, though, ain’t it cool? I will probably put it in the sidebar or use the more horizontal graphic rather than this one with the image. I dunno.

If you have questions about the code and stuff, check out the thread at the NaNoWriMo forum.

There are other meters and I list some of them on the Progress Meter page. The Writertopia site seems to be down though so none of their images are showing up. (they had the cool potato man images)

Speaking of wordcounts, I got diddly-squat done today. I wrote another +2K yesterday though. The laptop sits too far away and my eyes are getting tired much sooner than I am.
